Erin Corlette is an artist, gardener, Founder, Global Executive Creative Director of the Corlette Design Group and a passionate observer of clouds.
I saw Erin’s work in the Members’ Group exhibition at the SHAC Gallery and asked if she would be interested in an exhibition.
I first visited Erin’s studio to discuss the exhibition on an overcast, late summer day when her garden was about to go into that nowhere phase when the flowers are gone and the blaze of autumn colour had yet to begin.
As you would expect from someone who has been integral in defining some of the world’s foremost luxury hotel brands, Erin’s studio is at once comfortable and welcoming and serenely beautiful. But my eyes were instantly drawn to her paintings that glowed with the colours of her seasonal garden keenly observed. Before we knew it, we were deep in conversation about the daily joys of our Highland gardens and our obsession with looking at the sky as we drive, the vistas anticipated as we travel up and down the Hume Highway and the changing colours that occurred as weather fronts traverse our skies.
This was one of those conversations that nourished and sustained artists. We shared our passions and also talked about the mundane practicalities of making and showing our work.
It’s six months later and, wearing my other hat as curator at the SHAC, I am looking forward to helping Erin install her exhibition and have another opportunity to visit her Garden in the Clouds.
