Simon Bowley - Handmade Ceramics
Exhibition Opening Saturday 7 December at 4pm
I am a potter based in Moss Vale, located in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia. My creations are primarily wheel-thrown and hand-formed ceramics. I find the process of crafting pieces that are both functional and visually appealing to be fascinating. My goal is for the finished, vitrified pieces to retain some of the tactile qualities of the original clay. Achieving surfaces that complement the ceramic forms is a continual challenge. Many of my works feature decorations using wax resist and underglaze pigments. Additionally, I have been experimenting with wood-fired ceramics, utilising clays and slips that develop unique flashes from the prolonged high-temperature firing process.
I have worked full time in ceramics for over four decades mainly in Australia but also in Germany and Mexico designing and making wheel formed and hand built ceramics, building kilns and continuously experimenting with form and surface treatments.
I taught in Arts and Media with NSW TAFE for 14 years and was Head of Sturt Pottery, Mittagong for 10 years. I also taught in remote communities in NSW, QLD, NTH Territory and WA.
